Holi : Indian Festival of colors

Holi : Indian Festival of colors

Holi - the indian festival of colors is celebrated on the day following Holika Dahan. This day is also known as Holi, Hori , Dhulandi or Dhulendi. This day is marked as the celebration of burning of Holika and the victory of good over evil. Color powder and Colored water is applied on near and dear ones (and even the unknowns as no one minds it on this day). Color is applied on face, hands, skin, clothes and anywhere possible. Its a pleasant change and everyone enjoys playing with water due to a pleasant weather as ususally Holi is celebrated in February- March.

Holi is one of the two major festivals of India when life comes to a standstill leaving all offices, workplaces and schools closed. Its an annual event when people visit their relatives and close friends to congratulate each other. People also enjoy all sorts of drinks on this festival from traditional drinks to alcohol and this festival is taken as a liberty by many to have a taste of the untasted.

The celebrations last for a longer duration in some parts. Barsana is a place associated with Radha and Lord Krishna where Holi continues for more than a week in different forms out of which Lathmar Holi is the most famous one. Lath  means a thick stick which is used by villagers to fight against the small enemies and to control domestic animals. Lathmar means beating with a stick. Lathmar Holi was started by the female friends (gopis) of Lord Krishna to take a sweet revenge from him and to punish him for his naughty acts and in this Holi the females beat their male counterparts with stout sticks. As a tradition none of the men stands against the women but only try to escape the thrashing. Men only respond by throwing water and colors on the women and try to act in the manner Lord Krishna would have reacted to Radha.

This festival of colors is also taken as an opportunity in many parts to dissolve the differences and to re-unite with the old friends. People play colors with the hope that all enemity, even the colors of good and bad get mixed up in the colors of Holi and their lives becomes colorful in the days to come...
